A tale of two super names! Would you be interested to know which boy’s name and which girl’s name has the most variations in spelling throughout history and the world?

In doing some research, I became interested in finding out which boy’s and girl’s names had the most spelling variations, not only in the history of America, but throughout the entire world!

And I found out!  For the boys, it is John and for the girls, it is Mary!

I was so intrigued by this, that I looked up each name and found the following spelling variations and country/language of origin for each of them:

Yes, some names are truly “super names” as the wonderful, classic names of John and Mary can certainly attest to! I’m sure we all know and have known many people in our lives with these great names and the names John and Mary still remain very popular in today’s culture!

    Meaning of John

John, of Hebrew origin, means “God’s gracious gift” and refers most notably in the Old Testament to John the Baptist, considered to be the forerunner of Jesus of Nazareth, and who later baptized Jesus.

According to the Social Security Administration, the name John was the number 1 boy’s name in 1900 and held that spot until 1924, but stayed as one of the most popular boy’s names throughout the 20th century. In fact, by the year 2000, it had only dropped to number 24! And in 2021, John was the 27th most popular boy’s name, so yes, it remains very popular indeed!

    Meaning of the name Mary

Mary, of Hebrew origin, means “purity and perfection.” The most notable Mary is referenced in the bible as Mary, wife of Joseph and the mother of Jesus of Nazareth.

The name Mary was the number 1 girl’s name in 1900 and it held that spot until 1961, so 61 years as the most popular girl’s name in America is quite a feat! The traditional spelling of Mary dropped out of the top 50 during the past 20 years, but its variations of Moira, Maria, and Mia are keeping this beautiful and classic name high on the current charts of popular names!

    What’s in a name?

    Here is a short excerpt:

“We believe all children are gifts to our world, and their beautiful, deeply thought-out names deserve to be memorialized in poetry, meant to not only capture the wonderful feelings the gift giver has for the recipient, but also the wonderful characteristics and attributes of the recipient.

As King Solomon aptly stated, “A good name is rather to be chosen than riches.”
