    History and meaning of Elijah

    Elijah is of Hebrew origin meaning “God is my Savior; the Lord is my God; and loyal servant of God.” In the Bible, Elijah was a Hebrew prophet and miracle worker, as told in the two Books of Kings in the Old Testament. Because Elijah was a popular figure in medieval tales, and because his name was borne by a few early saints (who are usually known by the Latin form Elias), the name came into general use during the Middle Ages. In medieval England, it was usually spelled Elis. It declined in popularity by the 16th century, but was revived by the Puritans in the form Elijah after the Protestant Reformation.

    Famous People named Elijah

    A very famous person named Elijah is the English actor Elijah Wood, who starred in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the Hobbit.  Another famous Elijah is Elijah Blue Allman, son of Greg Allman of Allman Brothers fame, and iconic singer and actress, Cher.
